Tony McLean's East Yorkshire Wildlife Diary

Wildlife photography in East Yorkshire

Three’s a crowd…

Grey Heron display, originally uploaded by Tony McLean.

Another warm morning at Tophill Low. It appears that the Barn Owls at the south end of the reserve have left their nesting box and were disappointingly absent. Never mind. I was surprised to see three Grey Herons on the lagoon. Two were quite obviously paired up and the other solitary Heron was looking for a mate. I was treated to a marvellous mating display from the ‘single’ Heron as it jumped and leaped. It reminded me of the mating display of the Red Crowned Cranes that I saw in Hokkaido, Japan earlier this year. Quite spectacular and well worth the early morning visit.
